What does it mean if you have hooded eyes?

Hooded eyes are a condition in which excess skin creases from the brow line. It is usually more noticeable toward the outer edge of the eye, where the brow narrows toward the temple. People often associate it with aging, but it can also be due to genetics. Hooded eyes are inherited facial features characterized by excess skin that covers the crease of the eye from the brow bone to the eyelash line.

Hooded eyes can develop at an early age, but features tend to become prominent later in life due to skin changes associated with aging. People with eye hoodies may also have other disorders, such as ptosis, that worsen symptoms and require medical intervention. These are eyes that have excess skin from the eyebrow to the eyelash line, which hides the crease and the movable space of the eyelids. If you're like me and you've been struggling for years to follow makeup tutorials on YouTube, magazines, or blogs, you might have hooded eyes.

Most makeup tutorials are for almond or prominent eyes. Hooded eyes are a common facial feature that owes their appearance to a small layer of excess skin under each eyebrow. They may also be referred to as “hooded eyelids”. If your skin seems to bend from the brow bone at the top of the lash line, your eyes are likely hooded.

It can also be a bit difficult to find the natural crease (especially with your eyes closed), since the brow bone tends to hide part of the eyelid space. Some eyes are more hooded than others, either because of genetics or over time, because the skin folds naturally due to aging. There are six basic eye shapes: round eyes, monolid eyes, hooded eyes, eyes down, eyes up and almond eyes. Because the brow bone is so close to the lash line, many people with hooded eyes find that their mascara is transferred to the brow bone by the end of the day.

As I mentioned in the book and in this blog, you can always go to the web and YouTube to find hooded eye makeup tutorials. The usual detail of hoodies is that the movable eyelid (the part next to the eyelash line) is partially or completely obscured by the excess skin that covers it from the brow bone. If you notice that one or both of your eyelids suddenly start to fall out, or if the “hood” or droopy eyelids make it difficult to see clearly, schedule an eye exam. If you end up having hooded eyes because of your weight and then lose weight, you might end up with fewer hooded eyes.

Open your eyes comfortably; if most (or all) of your upper eyelids are covered by the skin below the brow bones, your eyelids are most likely hooded. There are also many descriptors with eyes such as closed eyes, wide eyes, asymmetric eyes, asymmetric hooded eyes, large eyes, small eyes and deep eyes. Because their eyebrows create a “hood” over their eyelids and hide any shadow or glitter applied to the eyelid, people with hooded eyes have ways to be creative when it comes to applying eye shadow.
